Crucible

$3,200.00

This piece draws on the concept of the feminine, of birth and rebirth, the vessel of creation, it refers to the physical and symbolic space of creation.

The open crucible mirrors the deep, magical connection between the feminine and the power of creation inherent in women. It is graceful, powerful and generous. Raw and organic on the surface, this form is lined with dark, reflective gold, symbolising the value of our life creating capacity.

Crucible is constructed using a variety of hand building techniques. My preferred method is coiling - long snakes of clay are rolled out and layered one atop the other then blended to form a solid plane, and paddled into shape. It is a slow process but if offers enormous flexibility in terms of design. The uniformity and symmetry is challenging in a free form construction and as such is imperfect. The texture on the surface has been created by carefully scraping back the clay in sweeping motions leaving a directional grain.

My sculptural work tends toward form over function, driven by texture, line, balance, light and shadow, suspended tension, and feminine inference.
