Creatrix
This piece draws on the concept of the feminine, of birth and rebirth, the vessel of creation, specifically, the ‘Creatrix’. It references the the feminine creator and the life giving, nurturing aspect of womanhood.
The impressed surface begins with a modest base and grows into an impressive fan or deep basin shape. The layers of light and metallic colours alludes to complexity and magic.
Creatrix is constructed using a variety of hand building techniques. My preferred method is coiling - long snakes of clay are rolled out and layered one atop the other then blended to form a solid plane, and paddled and pinched into shape. It is a slow process but if offers enormous flexibility in terms of design. The uniformity and symmetry is challenging in a free form construction and thus imperfect. The texture on the surface is finger-impressed, adding pressure form both sides of the clay, subsequently thinning the walls and allowing it to grow in height.
My sculptural work tends toward form over function, driven by texture, line, balance, light and shadow, suspended tension, and feminine inference.
