Amphoraic
This voluminous form draws on the feminine. It’s title. ‘Amphoraic’ draws from the ancient amphora, a vessel known for its curvaceous, full-bodied shape, often associated with femininity.
Its abundant, generous form elegantly levitates on it’s humble but strong base. The course, textured surface has been rubbed back to reveal suggestions of an array of colour, symbolic of the complexity and floridity that is overwhelmed by stoicism and doldrum.
Amphoraic is constructed using a variety of hand building techniques. My preferred method is coiling - long snakes of clay are rolled out and layered one atop the other then blended to form a solid plane. It is a slow process but if offers enormous flexibility in terms of design. The balance of this construction was particularly challenging, balancing the immense and generous bellied form on slight foundations.
