Make Your Own Dinner Set | JAN 9 - FEB 6 2025
6 WEEK COURSE
January 9 - February 6 (+ 1 extra session to glaze your dinner set!)
Thursday 6pm - 8:30pm
There are few things more satisfying than eating from a plate or bowl you made with your own hands, or serving up food to your guests on your own dinner set. This course consists of 5 weeks of construction time followed by an additional glazing session.
This course provides a unique opportunity to fill your cupboards with beautiful, handmade dinnerware that would cost a bomb from a retail outlet! Plus, the invaluable experience of creating it yourself, learning a new skill, and sharing a, peaceful, meditative, creative space with like minded budding creatives. The act of making something from the earth itself is very relaxing and grounding, and so good for the soul. You will find yourself leave the studio sessions feeling refreshed and lighter than when you entered.
Over the 5 weeks of building with clay you can expect to make:
4 x dinner plates
4 x side plates
4 x bowls
1 large serving platter.
Given time, extras may include small serving trays or dishes, salad servers, extra’s in your dinner set.
And the + 1 extra week ?
There is an additional glazing session included in the course fees so you can learn the art of glaze application and colour selection. Glazing is often where you put your own stamp on your work, so it is an important part of the process and one that really makes the works YOURS as the maker.
What to expect:
The main hand building technique used for construction of a hand built dinner set is the slab and slump mould methods, and you will get very comfortable with using a rolling pin! And a bonus, great for toning up those arms. You will be able to choose from a coarse rustic clay and a white fine clay for your set. Other clays are available but may incur an addition charge.
As part of the course you will use slump method to create a set of bowls. You will be taught how to create a plaster mould to work from using a shape of your choosing. You will also create your own makers mark stamp from plaster, which will be stamped into each piece of your dinner set.
Each piece of your set can be hand decorated or glazed at the end of the course. After all of your work has been dried and bisque fired, you will return for a glazing session, included in the course fees. We will arrange this date as a group approximately 3 weeks after your final making session. If you are unable to make this session your work can be glazed in clear or satin white glaze for an additional fee, and available for collection approximately 6 weeks from the final session.
Your bespoke dinner set will be available for collection approx. 6 weeks after glaze day.
COURSE INCLUDES:
All materials, including glaze
Use of all tools and required equipment
3 - 4 clay choices
All firing
Small class sizes
Experienced and professional tuition
Tea, water & plunger coffee
