Sculpture: Large Scale Vessels INTRO | FEB 27 - APR 3
6 WEEKS
February 27th - May 3rd
Thursday 6pm - 8:30pm
Learn how to build big and create a statement piece!
Sculptural ceramics is a super fun and challenging way to use clay and to express your inner artist. In this 6 week course we will explore hand building and surface decoration techniques with a focus on coil and pinch methods. The foundation skills taught in the first few weeks will enable you to make medium to large format sculptural works for your home or garden.
It is recommended you have some experience with clay as the process becomes more challenging when our pieces grow and we face things like gravity and balance! This course is however suitable for moderate or little experience, the instruction is very guided and supportive.
You will be assisted in the design and construction of your own sculptural collection with clear and attentive instruction and guidance. Expect to make 2 finished pieces.
In addition, we will delve into surface finishes and decorative techniques where you can add your individual flair to each piece. Your work will then be dried, and fired, or bisque fired ready for you to glaze. If you wish to glaze your finished artworks, sessions in the studio can be organised for an additional fee. Alternatively, your work will be fired to vitreous (the clay will be 'watertight' but not coated) and ready to collect.
Pieces will be available for collection 8 - 10wks post course, depending on size and drying time.

Course fees includes:
Experienced and tailored instruction.
First bag of hand building clay. Additional bags can be purchased through my studio or external suppliers. If you have clay preference this will need to be purchased AND APPROVED prior to the course start date. Clay’s have different firing ranges, different uses and can be harmful if selected incorrectly. All additional clay can be purchased from my stocks or through The Pug Mill. (Orders can be made through interstate suppliers though waiting periods are often months and the freight is exorbitant!)
Glaze - Clear dip glaze supplied. Glazing is where you can really make your mark as the creator. There are some beautiful colours and colour combinations available on the market, and the selection can be quite daunting. At the beginning of the course we will run through some options and orders will be placed to ensure delivery on time. Glazes range from $25 - $40/500ml tub depending on brand and colour. this is in addition to the course fees.
Additional glazes MUST BE APPROVED and can be ordered through me or directly through The Pug Mill (under Shop > Products > Ceramic Colour - Liquid). This will be discussed in week 1.
Firing - Each ceramic piece needs to be dried, bisque fired and then glaze fired. Included in the cost of this course is 1 x piece bisque fired and 1 x piece glaze fired. All additional firings can be organised at a discounted rate of $10/shelf, depending on height (shelf includes 15cm height)
All surface decoration and glazing will be undertaken by the participant during session times. If you run out of time, extra studio sessions may be arranged for an additional fee after course end date.
Use of studio tools.
Water, tea and local plunger coffee.
