Cephalopod in the Deep
Like looking up at the night sky, I feel humbled and awed when standing at the oceans edge, reminded of my smallness and brevity, motivated to make good on the blip of existence I’m gifted, grateful to be an infinitesimal part of this universe, curious about the ecosystems hidden from sight.
Cephalopod in the Deep depicts a wildly flamboyant octopus, one of our evolutions great enigmas, and a creature I’ve become increasingly fascinated with the more time I take to look.
Our oceans are a great source of inspiration and these ceramic wall hangings stand as a totem and a reminder to honour, protect, value, respect and conserve its innate balance and the wonders it provides.
I love working with different techniques to create unique ways of depicting subject matter. This ‘etching’ method starts with an opaque layer of underglaze to contrast the clay colour. Once the clay is leather I can use fine needle and loop tools to ‘etch’ into the surface, each stoke getting me closer to revealing a detailed image.
Rendering fine detail and intricacies of a subject matter is difficult to attain with ceramics, and I’ve worked to find solutions so I can artfully convey my mind’s eye.
Each platter is created individually and the design selected for its unique shape.
32 × 32cm
