Akimbo
All of my vessels are constructed using a variety of hand building techniques. My preferred method is coiling - long snakes of clay are rolled out and layered one atop the other then blended to form a solid plane. It is a slow and sometimes tedious process but if offers enormous flexibility in terms of design, the result is strong and pieces are peppered with makers marks – each piece is completely unique in its own right.
I lean more toward form over function, allured by texture, line, gravity, light and shadow, negative space, feminine and organic contours.
I was intent on holding symmetry to ransom for this piece. It took a lot of patience and a good understanding of the medium to pull it all together! And I simply adore the negative space and windows this vessel offers. The beautiful ochre and earth hues of the clay contrasted by satin white glaze.
*Not suitable for use as a vase - no internal glaze.
